CGNW Recommends: Boomer's Drive-In
The first memory I have of Boomer’s was as a lunchtime stop after writing hours of SAT exams at Western before driving back home out in the county. Since moving into town, it’s become a favorite stop on a weekend night - especially after ballroom or swing dancing for a few hours.
But it’s not just one of my top places to grab a quick dinner - it’s a local classic burger joint popular with locals, Western students, and travelers driving through town. Online reviews seem to agree that the charm of Boomer’s is how simple it is - no artisan this or aioli that. It’s not trying to be the most hip or most trendy. Boomer’s remains a comfortable place for standard American burgers, crispy waffle fries, and classic milkshakes and malts.
If you’ve never swung into the diner, you need to try what is presumably their bestseller: the #1 Combo. It’s the Boomer Burger, waffle fries, and a hard ice cream shake. Their famous shakes come in over ten flavors, like vanilla, chocolate, mocha, root beer, orange and pineapple.
Stopping in for a snack on a hot day? Grab a sleeve of waffle fries with dipping sauce (several flavors available - Tiffany always goes for the Ranch but wants to try the Special Sauce) and a milkshake.
While Boomers is designed with a reminiscent 1950s aesthetic, they’re up to the times when it comes to options for their guests. Drive in, walk in to the diner, call in your order or order online!
Right now, Boomuary is in full swing, with all burgers only $3.19. I guess you could say it’s kind of popular, given that during past sales:
“If you laid all the hamburger patties sold end to end, the line would stretch for just short of 9 miles”- roughly the length of Lake Whatcom (source).
“Cases of the waffle fries sold laid out next to each other would stretch across over 3 football fields” (source).
Whether or not you brave the crowds this month and next, Boomer’s should be on your Bellingham bucket list.
